Occurrence Rates

VASA PRAVIA IS NOT RARE. The condition impacts many more pregnancies than other conditions which are, routinely, screened for on the NHS.

• Studies evidence that Vasa Praevia occurs in approximately 1 in 1218 births.
• If the condition is not diagnosed prenatally 56% of babies die. Many of the surviving babies suffer HIE brain injury.
• In cases diagnosed prenatally (absent other congenital defect) the infant survival rate is almost 100%.
• Vasa Praevia occurs in approximately 1 in 200 IVF pregnancies
• Recent studies indicates that Vasa Praevia occurs in 1 in 105 twin pregnancies.
• Vasa Praevia impacts more than 500 pregnancies in the UK each year, often with catastrophic consequences, because it is not screened for. When detected early, and managed properly, babies are typically born safe and well. SCREENING MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
